As of April 5, 2023, pursuant to the decision of the Board of Trustees of the Israel Internet Association (RA), the price for registration of a domain name will be updated for the .IL and ישראל. domains to NIS 47 per year – an increase of NIS 3 compared to the previous price that was last set in 2018 at NIS 44. The decision of the Board of Trustees was resolved based on data regarding changes to the Consumer Price Index from December 2018 until the date of the discussion (held in December 2022).
Background of the decision
The decision to update the unit price for registration was made after a discussion that examined the budget data compared with the anticipated costs of operating the infrastructure and management of the domain names registry. At the end of the discussion, the Board of Trustees reached the conclusion that a price update was necessary in order to ensure that the guiding principle of operating the .IL and ישראל. domains optimally – in a safe, stable, and solid manner, could be preserved. This update will also ensure that the infrastructural changes required in order to continue to keep the Israeli registry system at the technological forefront and up to the standards customary worldwide could be performed.
In this context, it is important to note that during 2022, infrastructure services at the Israel Internet Association were developed in several areas: the registration management system was upgraded, domain names were renewed and updated between the Association and the registrars operating on its behalf so that operation would be immediate and automatic; in addition – new processes for verifying registration information were implemented in the system in order to streamline processes and optimize the quality and reliability of the information provided by the registrars and end users. Moreover, technological adjustments were made in order to launch the new domain in Hebrew – with the ישראל. suffix, and improvements were made in the DNS distribution process – by formulating new architecture and implementing it in practice on the authoritative DNS servers of the .IL and ישראל.domains.
These upgrades make it possible for the Association’s DNS infrastructures to continue to develop and remain at the forefront of the technology in this field.
At the same time, the Association’s public activities continue to develop and grow in volume in various areas, including – protection of the citizen’s rights online, research and creating information and data regarding the internet in Israel, as well as formulating policy recommendations on various internet-related topics.
Date of the update and transparently notifying the public
Pursuant to the Association’s policy, the updated price will be transparently publicized and will be NIS 47, as aforementioned. The updated pricing will be distributed to the accredited registrars and will become effective as of April 5, 2023.
