This publication offers a first of its kind mapping of Israel’s information ecosystem. It is part of the “Developing a Comprehensive Response to Online Misinformation and Disinformation in Israel” (DRI) project, led by ISOC-IL with support from the European Union.
Key challenges addressed include:
- High social media usage and changing news consumption habits
- Limited media literacy
- Low trust in traditional media, influenced by political and commercial pressure
- External threats, regional tensions and internal instability
- Polarization, societal divides and post-truth politics
To build resilience in such a complex, multi-threat environment, the report proposes a holistic response, which includes the following recommendations:
- Promote media literacy and public awareness through civic capacity building and public campaigns
- Build public trust in credible information sources including media, academia, experts, and state authorities
- Strengthen fact-checking ecosystems, combining efforts of journalists, newsrooms, and civil society
- Ensure accessible, verified information, adapted linguistically, digitally, and culturally
- Invest in research, development and innovation
- Encourage domestic and international collaboration
- Advocate and demand for policy and regulation
- Expand funding and resources to reinforce information integrity and infrastructure
