Discover the most common terms and character combinations in Israeli domain names–what social trends do they reveal? Which “buzzwords” are popular right now, and which have already faded away?
At the Domain Name Registry, our continuous exposure to newly registered domain names allows us to identify interesting trends reflected in the names themselves. This year, we decided to examine these trends more systematically and make the underlying data publicly available, inviting anyone to explore it independently and uncover interesting patterns in new domain registrations.
Who might find this interesting?
The data can reveal economic, social, technological, and cultural trends, making it valuable for researchers from various disciplines. But the data are also helpful for anyone looking to register a strong, strategic domain name for personal use, a project, or a business. Businesses undergoing branding processes and searching for an attractive, distinctive, or fitting website name may find inspiration here by identifying prominent naming trends in their field–whether they choose to follow the trend or deliberately stand out by choosing something entirely different.
How do we analyze the data?
To identify the most common character combinations, we perform a statistical analysis on newly registered domain names to determine which combinations were registered most frequently each month.
A “combination” refers to a string composed of characters permitted in domain name registration. It may be:
- a dictionary word (“studio”, “art”),
- a well-known acronym (“ai”),
- a common abbreviation (“dr”, “tlv”),
- a hyphenated name (“tel-aviv”),
- or a number (“2025”, “360”).
In general, we analyze combinations consisting of 3 characters or more, though we also include some 2-character combinations. These are usually common words or abbreviations such as “il” or “dr”. On the other hand, we exclude “stop words” (such as articles, conjunctions, and prepositions like “the” and “and”) as well as personal names. Most of the analysis is performed automatically, with periodic human review and refinement.
In the published data, we present the 20 most common combinations each month and publish it monthly on the regularly updated data page of the Domain Name Registry.
The Leading Terms of 2025
The most common combinations in 2025 can be thematically divided into five main categories:
- Combinations Indicating Professions– “Law” leads by a wide margin, likely reflecting both the high popularity of the legal profession in Israel and the need for law firms to maintain websites. Other popular professional-related combinations appear in the fields of art and creativity, such as “design”, “studio”, and “art”, as well as “dr” and “clinic”, commonly used by doctors and various therapists. The term “design” may indicate retail businesses — from furniture stores to small independent T-shirt designers, for example.
- Technology-Related Combinations–These include “ai”, “tech”, “digital”, and “smart”. Unsurprisingly, “ai” stands out in particular and appears in the top 20 consistently every month, reflecting the immense popularity this technology has gained in recent years–especially over the past year.
- Combinations Reflecting Local Identity–Examples include “israel”, “il”. Despite everything — and perhaps because of it — we are still here.
- Commerce and Real-Estate Related Combinations–These include “shop”, “group”, “nadlan” (real estate), “home” and “car.” They are commonly used by businesses in real estate, automotive services, and retail.
- Finance-Related Combinations–Examples include “finance” and “ins” (an abbreviation for “insurance”). These are commonly used by ventures in the finance and insurance sectors.
Trends Over Time
The popularity of common combinations can also be examined over time. For example, the graph below shows the monthly frequency of the five most popular combinations in 2025:
What Is the Relationship Between the Businesses Founded This Year and the Domain Names Registered This Year?
Every year, Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics publishes data on the number of new businesses established in each industry sector. Since data for 2025 is not yet available, the chart below presents the five leading sectors in new business creation for 2023.
It may be interesting to examine whether there is a correlation between the sectors in which the most businesses were established and the common combinations appearing in domain names–some of which, as we have shown, may indicate a particular profession or business field.
